Why Dive Pattaya? More Than Just Fish
It’s true that some days, the visibility in the Gulf of Thailand can be a challenge. We won’t pretend you will see 40 meters of crystal-clear water every day, like in the Andaman Sea. However, veteran divers know that Pattaya has significant advantages that make it a reliable, year-round diving hub—advantages that many cleaner locations cannot match.
The biggest advantage of diving in Pattaya is consistency and choice. Because we have such a massive number of islands dotted along the coast, we are almost always able to find a suitable dive spot, depending on the conditions.
-
Weather Flexibility: If the wind is coming from the East, we simply steam to the West side of an island and enjoy calm waters.
-
Conditions Choice: If the surface current is running strong at one site, we have three or four other "go-to" spots that offer protection.
-
Wreck Diver’s Paradise: The crowning jewel of Pattaya diving is its unparalleled access to deep shipwrecks. We have multiple decommissioned navy ships scuttled to form thriving artificial reefs, including the famous HTMS Khram, HTMS Kut, and HTMS Mataphon. Wreck diving here is consistent, historic, and spectacular.
-
Topographical Variety: We have sites offering everything from gently sloping sandy bottoms (perfect for training) to dramatic rocky drop-offs, underwater pinnacles, and small canyons to explore.
While the pelagic visibility is sometimes low, the diversity of dive types makes Pattaya unbeatable for training and variety.
Understanding the Archipelago: Near vs. Far Islands
Pattaya’s dive logistics are divided into two distinct zones: the Near Islands and the Far Islands. Knowing the difference helps you plan your day on the water.

The Near Islands (Pattaya Gateway)
As the name suggests, these are the islands closest to the mainland. Because they are easy to reach, they are the main destination for introductory dives, Open Water courses, refreshers, and relaxed "two-tank" morning trips.
-
Which Islands? The near group consists primarily of Koh Larn (the largest "Coral Island"), Koh Sak, Koh Krok, and Koh Nok.
-
What is the distance? These islands sit roughly 7 to 10 kilometers off the coast of Pattaya Beach.
-
Travel Time:
-
Speedboat: Only 15 to 20 minutes from Jomtien or Pattaya beaches.
-
Standard Big Dive Boat: A relaxed 45 to 60 minutes, usually including coffee and breakfast on board.
-
The Far Islands (The Outer Reefs)
To experience the best marine life, healthier coral formations, and superior visibility that the Gulf offers, you must venture further out. The Far Islands are often marine reserves or navy-controlled zones, meaning they see less boat traffic and are less crowded.
-
Which Islands? The key far islands include Koh Phai (Bamboo Island), Koh Rin, Koh Man Wichai, and Koh Klung Badan. They also feature dramatic underwater rock formations like North Rock and South Rock near Koh Rin.
-
What is the distance? These sit much further out, ranging from 15 to 25 kilometers offshore.
-
Travel Time:
-
Speedboat: A fast, bouncy 30 to 45 minutes (this is likely the "35 minutes" you are thinking of).
-
Standard Big Dive Boat: Usually a full day trip, with the travel time being roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. This allows you to have a relaxed lunch between dives while the boat changes locations.
