The Thrill of Wreck Diving
The Hardeep is one of the best-known wreck dives around Samae San, near Pattaya, and it is a site we never tire of visiting. For wreck divers, the first attraction is obviously the ship itself. Swimming alongside the wreck gives you an impressive view of the structure. Over time, marine growth has transformed it into an artificial reef.
But one of the things I enjoy about diving the Hardeep is that there is much more to see than just the wreck. Sometimes you need to stop swimming, slow down, and start looking at the smaller details.
The Small Stuff: Hidden Treasures
During Sunday’s dive, we spent some time searching around the wreck with our cameras. We found plenty of subjects for underwater macro photography. Among the marine life we photographed were several colourful nudibranchs, an eel hiding around the wreck, and a stonefish doing what stonefish do best — almost completely disappearing into its surroundings.
This is one reason I enjoy underwater photography so much. A diver can swim past the same section of a wreck several times and see something completely different each time. The large structure might initially grab your attention, but often, some of the most interesting marine life is only a few centimetres long and hiding right in front of you.
Wreck Diving Around Pattaya and Samae San
When people think about scuba diving in Pattaya, they sometimes don't realise how much variety we have available. Around Pattaya and Samae San, we can combine wreck diving, coral reefs, marine life, macro photography, and deeper recreational dives, often during the same diving day.
The Hardeep is a good example. You can spend part of the dive appreciating the history and size of the wreck and then switch completely to photographing a tiny nudibranch. That variety is exactly what keeps local diving interesting, even for divers who regularly dive these sites.
