PADI Open Water Diver Course Explained: Your First Step Into Scuba Diving in Pattaya
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a certified scuba diver?
Learning to scuba dive opens the door to an entirely new world. From exploring coral reefs and discovering marine life to experiencing the feeling of weightlessness underwater, scuba diving offers an adventure unlike anything else.
But before you can explore the underwater world, you need to learn the essential skills and understand how to dive safely.
At Dream Team Divers in Pattaya, Thailand, we believe that good preparation makes a real difference. That's why we've created a PADI Open Water Diver explainer video to help you understand how the course works, what you'll learn, and how to prepare before your first dive.
Whether you've already booked your course or are simply curious about learning to dive, this guide will help you understand what to expect.
Our video walks you through the Open Water course, from completing your eLearning and practising in the swimming pool to your first four ocean dives.
You'll also discover how our additional Dream Team Divers Dive Hub learning tools can help you prepare for your training.
WHAT IS THE PADI OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE?
The PADI Open Water Diver course is one of the world's most recognised entry-level scuba diving certifications.
It teaches beginners the knowledge and practical skills necessary to become certified recreational divers.
Once successfully certified, adult Open Water Divers are qualified to dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 metres, within their training, experience and environmental conditions. Younger divers have additional age-related restrictions.
The course is divided into three main parts: knowledge development, confined water training and four open water training dives.
At Dream Team Divers, we normally complete the practical training over three days.
HOW DOES THE OPEN WATER COURSE WORK?
Day 1: Swimming Pool Training
Your first practical training day takes place in a controlled swimming pool environment.
You'll learn how to assemble and check your scuba equipment, breathe comfortably underwater and communicate using underwater hand signals.
Your instructor will also teach you essential skills such as clearing water from your mask, recovering your regulator, controlling your buoyancy and responding to common underwater problems.
The goal is to become familiar with your equipment and develop the fundamental skills you'll need before entering the ocean.

Day 2: Your First Two Ocean Dives
After completing the necessary pool training, it's time to take your new skills into the ocean!
During your first two open water training dives, you'll practise what you've learned in real diving conditions under your instructor's supervision.
You'll develop your buoyancy control, practise safe descents and ascents, monitor your breathing gas and become more comfortable moving underwater.
You'll also have the opportunity to experience the marine environment around Pattaya.
Day 3: Your Final Two Ocean Dives
Your final training day builds on everything you've learned.
You'll complete additional required skills, improve your underwater control and develop your understanding of dive planning and buddy procedures.
By the end of the course, you'll have completed four open water training dives.
Once you've successfully met all the PADI course requirements, you'll earn your Open Water Diver certification.
LEARNING THE THEORY: DIVE COMPUTERS, PRESSURE AND DIVE PLANNING
Scuba diving isn't just about learning how to breathe underwater.
Understanding what happens to your body and equipment as you descend is an important part of becoming a responsible diver.
During your PADI eLearning and practical training, you'll learn about water pressure, equalisation, buoyancy, gas consumption and dive planning.
You'll also be introduced to dive computers and the PADI Recreational Dive Planner (RDP).
A dive computer helps you monitor important information such as your depth, dive time, no-decompression limit and ascent information.
The RDP introduces you to the principles of nitrogen exposure, no-decompression limits, surface intervals and repetitive dive planning.
These concepts help you understand why recreational divers must plan their dives and remain within their training and personal limits.
Our explainer video introduces these topics so that you'll already be familiar with the basic concepts before beginning your practical training.
PREPARE FOR YOUR COURSE WITH THE DREAM TEAM DIVERS DIVE HUB
One of the things we've introduced at Dream Team Divers is our online Dive Hub.
We wanted to give students additional resources to help them prepare for their courses, rather than relying exclusively on their official eLearning.
Our Dive Hub contains interactive educational tools that allow you to explore diving concepts at your own pace.
For example, you can familiarise yourself with underwater hand signals, learn more about dive planning and gas awareness, and explore tools such as our underwater compass and weight calculator.
These resources are designed to complement your PADI eLearning and instructor-led training.
The better you understand the basic concepts before arriving, the more time you can spend concentrating on developing your practical skills.

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE BEFORE STARTING YOUR OPEN WATER COURSE?
Before arriving for your practical training, we recommend completing your PADI eLearning and watching our Open Water explainer video.
You'll also need to complete the required medical screening and meet the course's swimming requirements.
If you're unsure about anything in the eLearning, write down your questions and discuss them with your instructor.
You don't need previous scuba diving experience to begin the Open Water course.
You just need to meet the course prerequisites, be comfortable in the water and be willing to learn.
Our job is to teach you the skills, knowledge and procedures necessary to become a certified diver.
