What You Will Learn

Emergency First Response follows the international medical guidelines set by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The curriculum integrates two core modules into a single, cohesive emergency response protocol.

THE CYCLE OF CARE: AB-CABS™

1. Primary Assessment (AB)

• A - Airway Open? (Assess Scene & Apply Barriers)

• B - Breathing Normally?

2. Unresponsive & Not Breathing Normally -> CPR Loop (CAB)

• C - Chest Compressions (30 compressions)

• A - Airway Open

• B - Breathing for Patient (2 rescue breaths)

* Continue 30:2 cycle until an AED arrives or EMS takes over.

3. Responsive & Breathing Normally -> Secondary Checks (S)

• S - Serious Bleeding (Apply direct pressure & pressure bandage)

• S - Shock Management (Maintain body temperature & elevate legs if suitable)

• S - Spinal Injury Management (Stabilize head and neck)

1. Primary Care (CPR)

Primary care addresses immediate, life-threatening conditions. You will practice:

• Scene Assessment & Barrier Use: Evaluating risks and using protective gloves or masks before taking action.

• Primary Assessment & Responsive Checks: Using the Responder Statement and the AB-CABS™ memory model.

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Executing chest compressions paired with rescue breathing at a 30:2 ratio.

• Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Operating an AED unit safely during cardiac arrest scenarios.

• Critical Injury Management: Treating serious bleeding with direct pressure bandages, managing shock, and immobilizing suspected spinal injuries.

2. Secondary Care (First Aid)

Secondary care provides patient support when Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are delayed or unavailable. You will practice:

• Injury & Illness Assessment: Systematically conducting head-to-toe evaluations to relay clear details to medical professionals.

• Bandaging & Splinting: Stabilizing fractures, securing joint dislocations, and dressing open wounds.

• First Aid Management: Handling common conditions such as burns, temperature-related illnesses, and common recreational injuries.
