The Legend of the HTMS Kut: Pattaya’s Premier WWII Wreck Dive

  • Apr 1
  • 3 min read

If you are looking for the ultimate wreck diving experience in Pattaya, the HTMS Kut (LSM-731) stands as a monument to naval history and marine conservation. Whether you are an aspiring wreck specialist or a tech diver looking for a deep playground, "The Kut" offers an underwater adventure that few sites in Thailand can match.

A Brief History: From WWII to the Gulf of Thailand

The story of the HTMS Kut began thousands of miles away in Chicago, Illinois. Originally commissioned as the USS LSM-333 in 1944, this Landing Ship Medium (LSM) was built for the grit of World War II.

  • Battle Tested: She served in the Pacific Theater, most notably participating in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

  • A New Chapter: Following the war, she was transferred to the Royal Thai Navy in 1946 and renamed the HTMS Kut. She continued her service for decades, even playing a logistical role during the Korean War.

  • The Final Mission: After being decommissioned in 1990, she was chosen for a new kind of service.

When and Why was the HTMS Kut Sunk?

On September 17, 2006, the HTMS Kut was scuttled off the coast of Pattaya. The sinking was a coordinated effort by the Royal Thai Navy and the Pattaya City Council to honor the 60th anniversary of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne.

Beyond the ceremony, the goal was practical: to create a massive artificial reef to boost local marine biodiversity and provide a world-class training site for the Pattaya diving community.

Dive Site Specifications: Location and Depth

The HTMS Kut rests upright on a sandy seabed just North of Koh Sak, making it one of the "Near Island" wrecks accessible within a 40-minute boat ride from Bali Hai Pier.

  • Max Depth: 30–31 meters (at the sand).

  • Deck Depth: 22–25 meters.

  • Top of Mast: Approximately 12–15 meters.

  • Length: 62 meters long, making it easy to navigate in a single dive.

Recommended Courses & Certifications

Because the deck sits below 18 meters, the HTMS Kut is strictly an Advanced Open Water (or higher) dive site. If you want to make the most of this wreck, we highly recommend the following:

  1. Enriched Air (Nitrox) Specialty: At 25–30 meters, your "No Deco" time disappears fast. Diving on Nitrox allows you to stay on the wreck longer to explore the gun mounts and engine room.

  2. Wreck Diver Specialty: The HTMS Kut was expertly prepared for divers. Large holes were cut into the hull to allow for safe penetration. Taking your Wreck Specialty here will teach you how to navigate these corridors using lines and proper finning techniques to avoid "silt-outs."

  3. Deep Diver Specialty: To safely explore the rudders and the very bottom of the hull at 30m+, this course is a perfect match.
